How to Clean Rubber Flooring? Maintenance Guide

Proper cleaning and maintenance of rubber flooring is essential to preserve its safety performance and extend its lifespan. Whether your playground has EPDM poured rubber or interlocking rubber tiles, regular care keeps the surface looking new and performing optimally for years.

Rubber Flooring Cleaning and Maintenance

Daily Maintenance

Daily care prevents buildup of debris that can damage the surface:

  • Sweeping: Remove leaves, dirt, sand and debris using a soft broom or leaf blower
  • Visual inspection: Check for damage, loose edges, standing water or foreign objects
  • Spot cleaning: Address spills and stains immediately before they set

Weekly Cleaning

Weekly deep cleaning maintains surface appearance:

  • Washing: Use mild soap (pH neutral) and water with a soft brush or mop
  • Rinsing: Clean water rinse to remove soap residue
  • Joint check: Inspect tile seams and edges for separation
  • Drainage check: Ensure water flows freely off the surface

EPDM Poured Rubber Care

Do's

  • Use pH-neutral cleaning solutions
  • Clean with soft brushes or mops
  • Remove stains promptly with appropriate cleaners
  • Keep surface free of standing water

Don'ts

  • No petroleum-based solvents (damages polyurethane binder)
  • No high-pressure washing above 100 bar
  • No metal tools or wire brushes
  • No bleach or acidic cleaners

Rubber Tile Care

  • Check interlocking edges for separation regularly
  • Replace individual damaged tiles without disturbing surrounding tiles
  • Ensure drainage channels beneath tiles remain clear
  • Re-apply tile adhesive if edges begin to lift
  • Deep clean beneath tiles annually if possible

Seasonal Maintenance Calendar

Spring

  • Deep clean after winter debris accumulation
  • Check for frost damage or cracking
  • Inspect all seams and edges
  • Top up any settled areas

Summer

  • UV inspection for fading or surface degradation
  • Clean tree sap and bird droppings promptly
  • Check surface temperature in direct sun areas
  • Maintain cleaning frequency during heavy use

Autumn

  • Frequent leaf removal (decomposition stains rubber)
  • Prepare drainage for increased rainfall
  • Schedule annual professional inspection
  • Clean and treat before winter

Winter

  • Remove snow with plastic shovels only (never metal)
  • Avoid de-icing salts that can damage rubber
  • Check for ice damage to seams
  • Monitor drainage during freeze-thaw cycles
