What are EN 1176 and EN 1177? Playground Safety Standards

Playground safety is governed by two critical European standards: EN 1176 for playground equipment and EN 1177 for impact-attenuating surfacing. Understanding these standards is essential for anyone involved in playground design, installation or maintenance.

EN 1176 and EN 1177 Playground Safety Standards

What is EN 1176?

EN 1176 is the European standard that specifies safety requirements for playground equipment. It covers seven parts:

  • Part 1: General safety requirements and test methods
  • Part 2: Swings
  • Part 3: Slides
  • Part 4: Runways (cableways)
  • Part 5: Carousels
  • Part 6: Rocking equipment (seesaws)
  • Part 7: Guidance on installation, inspection and maintenance

EN 1176 Key Requirements

  • No entrapment hazards (head, neck, clothing traps)
  • Minimum and maximum gaps between components
  • Structural integrity under expected loads
  • Safe access and egress points
  • Protection against shearing and crushing points
  • Stability and anchoring requirements

What is EN 1177?

EN 1177 specifies requirements for impact-attenuating playground surfacing. It defines how to measure a surface's ability to absorb impact from falls using the Head Injury Criterion (HIC).

Head Injury Criterion (HIC)

HIC measures the severity of head impact on a surface:

  • HIC below 1000: Acceptable - low risk of serious head injury
  • HIC above 1000: Unacceptable - high risk of serious head injury
  • Testing uses instrumented headform dropped from specified heights

Critical Fall Height (CFH)

The CFH is the maximum height from which a fall onto the surface would result in a HIC of 1000. Each playground must have surfacing rated for the highest fall height of the equipment above it.

Equipment HeightRequired CFHMin. Rubber Thickness
Up to 1.0m1.0m20mm
1.0m - 1.5m1.5m25-30mm
1.5m - 2.0m2.0m30-35mm
2.0m - 3.0m3.0m40-45mm

Safety Zones

EN 1176 requires minimum safety zones around equipment:

  • Extend fall zone minimum 1.5m beyond equipment footprint
  • Additional space for moving equipment (swings, seesaws)
  • No overlapping safety zones between equipment
  • Impact surface required throughout entire safety zone

Inspection and Maintenance

EN 1176 Part 7 outlines three levels of inspection:

  1. Routine visual: Daily or weekly quick checks for obvious hazards
  2. Operational: Quarterly detailed inspection of all components
  3. Annual main: Comprehensive professional inspection including structural assessment
